Oh my gosh…this Melted Snowman project was just too much fun! I can’t handle the cuteness overload!

So this project can be a winter themed decoration — simply display him on a table top. He can be a holiday gift or hostess gift. Or he could be a child’s lovey! But please note that if you do decide to make a child’s lovey, that you use safety eyes or embroidery instead of the buttons shown on the example. We don’t want any choking hazards!
The Melted Snowman pattern uses only easy stitches: single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet. The trim on the hat is worked in the Crab Stitch or Reverse Single Crochet, however, if this stitch is too complicated, I’ve suggested to simply slip stitch around the border, which would make the hat match the mittens anyway.
The body of the snowman is crocheted using size 6 super bulky weight yarn and an N (10 mm) crochet hook. I used Bernat Blanket yarn in White. The accessories are all worked up in Red Heart Super Saver with an H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook, but any worsted weight yarn will work. There is also some light sewing involved in this project if you choose to use buttons as I did.
His parts are not symmetrical or straight simply because I wanted him to have a “melted” look to him. You could certainly make him perfectly straight if that interests you. I was just drawn to the more haphazard look. Ha! If I decided to make this again, I think the only thing I would change is moving his nose slightly more to the left. That’s my only issue with the final outcome.
I’m going to keep my babbling short since the pattern is so long. Do you see this as a child’s lovey or decoration? Let me know in the comments below! I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Round 13: Ch 1, crab st (reverse sc) in every st around.
Note: If you just can’t get the hang of the crab st, you can simply sl st the entire way around. Make sure the right side of the hat is facing you. Then the hat trim will match the mittens.
Finish off and leave an 8” – 10” tail for sewing the hat to the head.
Pompom
Cut a 5” piece of Red Heart Blue yarn and set aside. Place your index finger and middle finger together side by side. Wrap the Red Heart Blue yarn around your two fingers 20 times (wrap somewhat close to the ends of your fingers).
With your free hand, insert your 5” cutting in between your two fingers that are wrapped in yarn (In the space between the wrapped yarn and your palm). Wrap the cut piece around the center of your pompom. Work the first part of a knot, pulling tightly to keep the strands secure.
While pinching your two ends to keep your half knot from coming undone, gently slide your pompom off of your two fingers. Pull tight again on your half knot and then complete the knot. Insert your scissors into the looped upper portion of your pompom, gently pulling up to create tension and begin cutting all of the loops. Flip pom over and repeat for the other side of the pompom. Don’t cut the two ends from the tie. Fluff the pompom and trim to desired roundness.
Note: Don’t forget that there is a photo tutorial available if this is confusing. The link is listed in the Notes section of the pattern.
Using the two ends from the tie and either a tapestry needle or your hook to pull the ends through, attach the pompom to the center FC of the hat, securely tying it inside the hat.
Set hat aside.
Carrot Nose
Using Red Heart Carrot and H/8 (5.00 mm) hook
FC: Ch 6
Round 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sl st. Sc in next 2 chs, hdc in next 2 chs, ch 2, sl st in 1st ch made in FC (the base of the last hdc you made).
Finish off. Leave a 7” – 8” tail for sewing to head.
Set aside Carrot Nose.
Head
Using Blanket yarn and 10 mm hook
FC: Ch 4, sl st in 1st ch to form a loop. (Or you can use the Magic Circle)
Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in loop. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, 2 sc in next 7 sts, sc in last st. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn. (16 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn. (24 sc)
Round 4 – Round 8: Ch 1, sc in every st around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn. (24 sc)
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc2tog, *sc in next st, sc2tog* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn. (16 sc)
Remove your hook and place a stitch marker in your loop to keep your work from unraveling.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail of the Carrot Nose, tack stitch the nose to the head between Round 6 and Round 7 as shown in main photo.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail of the Hat, tack stitch the hat (just above Round 13 is enough to secure it) into place on top of the head.
Using a sewing needle and thread, attach the button eyes between the nose and hat. If using safety eyes, no sewing needle and thread are needed. Attach according to package directions.
Stuff head with fiberfill or polyfil to desired density.
Remove stitch marker and reinsert crochet hook to continue making the head.
Round 10: Ch 1, starting in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc2tog. Sc2tog the rest of the way around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Don’t turn. (8 sc)
Round 11: Ch 1, starting in the same st ch 1 comes out of, sc2tog. Sc2tog around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. (4 sc)
Finish off. Leave a 8” – 10” tail for sewing the head to the blanket.
Using a tapestry needle and the tail from the head, attach the head to the center FC of the Blanket/Circle Body. Stitch several times to ensure it is secure. It may be slightly floppy at first, but the scarf will add more stability when it is attached. Weave in ends.
Scarf
Using Red Heart Blue and H/8 (5.00 mm) hook
FC: Ch 6
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc. Sc in next 4 chs. Turn. (5 sc)
Row 2 – Row 76: Ch 1, sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc in next 4 sts. Turn. (5 sc)
Finish off.
Fringe
Cut 10 – 5” pieces of Red Heart in Blue.
Fold one piece of fringe in half. Insert your H/8 (5.00 mm) hook into one of the sts at the end of the scarf and hook the center loop of your fringe piece. Gently pull through the st halfway so that there is the loop on one side of the scarf and the two ends are on the other side. With your hook inserted through the loop, hook the two ends and draw them through the loop (wrapping around the st at the end of the scarf). Pull gently until the loop is closed.
Repeat with the other pieces of fringe. Five fringe pieces on either end of the scarf, one in each of the sts. Once finished, trim the fringe to be equal lengths.
Wrap the scarf around the “neck” of the snowman (just below the head) and tie once. Don’t tie too tightly. Using a tapestry needle and Red Heart in Blue, tack st the scarf into place only around the neck. Let the ends hang loose.
Mittens
Make 2 using Red Heart in Blue and H/8 (5.00 mm) hook
FC: Ch 6
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc. Sc in next 4 chs. Turn. (5 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (6 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc in next 5 sts. Turn. (7 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sc)
Thumb
Row 5 – Row 6: Ch 1, sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc in next 2 sts. Turn. (3 sc)
Row 7: Ch 1, skip the st the ch 1 comes out of, sc in next st, sl st in last st. (1 sc)
Finish off.
Fingers
Flip mitten over so the thumb is on the left.
Attach yarn at the furthest st on right of Row 4.
Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc in next 4 sts. Turn. (6 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in same st ch 1 comes out of, sc in next 5 sts. Turn. (7 sc)
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in next 7 sts. Turn. (7 sc)
Row 8: Ch 1, skip the st the ch 1 comes out of, sc in next 5 sts, sl st in last st. Turn. (5 sc)
Row 9: Ch 1, skip the st the ch 1 comes out of, sl st in next st, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in last st. Turn. (3 sc)
Row 10: Ch 1, skip the st the ch 1 comes out of, sl st in next st, sc in next 2 sts, sl st in last st. Turn. (2 sc)
Row 11: Ch 1, skip the st the ch 1 comes out of, sl st in next st, sc in next st, sl st in last st. (1 sc)
Don’t finish off.
Border
Note: The borders of the two mittens are worked differently for each one. For the first mitten, the thumb will be on the left and you will work your sl sts to the left around the mitten. For the 2nd mitten, flip the mitten over so that the thumb is on the right. You will work your sl sts to the left around the mitten.
Round 1: Sl st evenly around the perimeter of the mitten. 2 sl sts in the same st for the corners (the base of the glove/wrist section).
Finish off. Leave an 8” – 10” tail for sewing.
Using a sewing needle and thread, attach the snowflake buttons to the top of the mittens, if desired. (Not recommended for small children.)
Lay the Blanket/Circle Body out flat with the snowman head sitting upright. Place your mittens on either side of the head about halfway between the head and the edge of the blanket. Make sure your thumbs are facing each other. For a more “melted” look, place the mittens at different angles.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail of the mitten, surface st the mittens to the blanket so that the blue yarn won’t show through the bottom of the blanket.
Repeat with the 2nd mitten.
Using a sewing needle and thread, attach the three black buttons on the blanket in front of the face as shown in the main photo. For a more “melted” look, stagger the buttons. If using safety eyes, no sewing needle and thread are needed. Attach according to package directions.

Hello! I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble. If you still need some help, would you mind emailing me at highlandhickorydesigns@gmail.com? If it is at all possible, could you include a photo of your work? That way I can try to figure out what is happening with your piece. You may just crochet a bit tighter than I do and need to go up one or two hook sizes. But that is just a guess for now. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!
Dear Erica, I love your melted snowman! I haven’t crocheted in 43 years but am picking it up again. Iam frustrated though because I have started over 4 times already. The crocheting looks beautiful but I keep ending up with a bowl that wont lay down flat and I just can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. I keep on loosening up the stiches with each row but it doesn’t help. Please help????
Hi Joy! You’re very welcome for the pattern and I’m so glad that you were able to make them despite my typo. I will correct that immediately. Thank you for pointing it out. I’m just thankful it wasn’t a major flaw. Thank you for commenting and have a wonderful day!
Hey Erica! Thank you for your pattern! I have now made two. One of which I made into a girl!!! I hate to sound critical and would have sent this privately but couldnt find a place. You can delete my comment if youd like. This may not be a mistake but it threw me off. On the mitten, on row 1, when you finish row one shouldnt it say “turn”? On my second one I did, but my first one I followed insteuctions and made row 2 on the other side of my FC cause it didn’t say turn!! Just asking! Thanks foe all you do!!
Thank you so much, Theresa! I hope you enjoy the pattern!
This is so adorable! I can’t wait to try it.
Hi Darlene!
It says Round 7 – Round 12: Ch 1, sc etc. Then it goes on to Round 13, which is different. So for Rounds 7 through 12 work the same instructions. I was wondering if people would miss that, so I’m going to go into the instructions now and make it bold so no one else misses it. Thank you!
After Round 7 on hat it then says ’round 13′. Did you mean ’round 8′ or should it read ’rounds 8-12′ then ’round 13′?
